In 2012, Alexandre Mouracade of Split Secs landed on various charts and track listings when the duo’s first EP “I’m Not Losin’” (Jolly Jams) earned heavy attention worldwide. SONNS is a new solo offering from this LA-based producer blending soulful sentiments with a hands-on analog approach applied to genre-bending house, dub and techno. Basslines form the foundation of a collection of tracks punctuated by captivating, warm and hypnotic vocals. The Red Baron, better known as Tobias Buch Andersen of the Late Great Fitzcarraldos, rounds out the visceral title track, ‘On My Mind’ giving this love song deeper meaning. Mark E of Merc/ Ghostly fame offers up an interpretation of “On My Mind” that stays true to the original while weaving in a subtle and darker sensibility with an interesting steel drum groove. ‘Starts Tonight’ is firmly planted in the ethos of party music; it’s a welcoming anthemic song with a timeless swing that echos the lineage of the classic Chicago, Detroit and New York scenes. This debut EP from SONNS sets the bar high for the caliber of artists coming out of Los Angeles and offers purists a familiar reminder of the roots of good dance music.
